Sri Lanka has struggled with political upheaval for many years. The tourism business was nearly destroyed during the civil war between Tamil separatists and the Sinhalese government. The disturbances are over, and the area is once again tranquil. Be mindful of your surroundings, as you would with any international trip. On the beach, balconies, or terraces, never leave your belongings unattended. To avoid pickpockets, exercise caution in open spaces with crowds particularly at markets.

Although English is a language that is quite widely spoken throughout the nation, not everyone is necessarily fluent in it.

Everything depends on where you're going and the time of year you're travelling. We advise wearing loose-fitting cotton clothing (or some other type of breathable modern fabric) in Sri Lanka. Wearing caps and long sleeves will shield you from the sun. If you're going to the hill country, where the evenings can get chilly, you should bring some warm clothing. To account for the varied temperatures, layering is recommended. Remember to take off your shoes and hat while entering a Buddhist or Hindu temple, and dress modestly when visiting places of worship.
