Yes. During British administration, the nation was known as Ceylon. After gaining independence in 1948, the name persisted until 1972, when Sri Lanka, which means "Resplendent Country" in Sanskrit, was adopted. Sometimes the word Ceylon is used, as in the case of "Ceylon tea."
The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which is granted through an online system, is a formal permit for a brief visit to Sri Lanka. Whether you want to travel to Sri Lanka for business, pleasure, or transit, you must get an ETA. There is no documentation, copies, or images needed to get the ETA. A 30-day Short Visit visa will be given to ETA holders at the Sri Lankan port of entry.

Sri Lanka is fantastic to visit at any time of year! It has two monsoons that affect various parts of the island at different times of the year because it is a year-round destination. Hence, visit between December and April if you want to take advantage of the greatest weather at the western and southern seaside resorts. Yet, even during the monsoon, sunny, pleasant days are typical, despite the possibility of sporadic nighttime showers. The general climate is hot and humid.
In Sri Lanka, meals typically consist of rice with fish or chicken curry, chutney, and sambols. In Sri Lanka's major cities, there are many restaurants serving different cuisines. In cities like Colombo, Kandy, or Nuwara Eliya, vegetarian options are rather simple to locate. Some locations, such Galle, Sigiriya, and Matara, could make it challenging to obtain vegetarian meals.

Sri Lanka is one of the world's most beautiful countries and a relatively safe place to travel. As one of the few "un-spoilt" travel destinations in Asia, Sri Lanka is witnessing record-breaking tourist numbers and the nation is at peace. We conduct our trips in locations that are regarded as safe for tourists to visit. Many of our customers have forged friendships with one another and are eager to visit their "second home," where they feel protected and comfortable.
Kids are welcome everywhere in Sri Lanka. People go out of their way to fuss over and amuse kids; when it comes to foreign kids, the effort is twofold. There are frequent family rooms at inns and hotels. Restaurants have excellent child-friendly policies. While baby bottles are more difficult to find, shops do sell baby food and diapers. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent. The beaches and all the delights that come with them are undoubtedly the biggest draw for kids. Other attractions include the Pinnawala elephant orphanage, the Dehiwala Zoo in Colombo, and a winding train ride through the hill highlands.
In January, on or around January 14, is Tamil Thai Pongal Day. The national holiday is observed on February 4. Every year, New Year's Eve is celebrated in Sinhala and Tamil on April 13 or 14, whereas New Year's Day is commonly celebrated on April 14 or 15. There are some Buddhist and other community festivals which are celebrated as per their religious calendars and dates.
Sri Lanka has a good system of healthcare. Outside of major cities, emergency medical facilities might not be available. It could be necessary to transport you to Colombo for treatment. We advise using private hospitals since they are more likely to provide superior care. Before arriving in Sri Lanka, travellers from Africa or South America must present a current certificate proving that they have been immunised against Meningitis and Yellow Fever. Hepatitis A, polio, and tetanus vaccinations must be current. It is common to contract mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue, chikungunya, and malaria. You are advised to use effective mosquito protection.
Grab some over-the-counter medicine for an upset stomach before you leave the country, just in case. There is a pharmacy in almost every town that sells common medications. However, as the availability of medical supplies may vary, we encourage you to bring any particular medications. Before travelling to Sri Lanka, it is strongly advised that you purchase comprehensive health insurance coverage.
With 14 national parks, Sri Lanka has 91 mammals, 16 of which are indigenous. They include elephants, leopards, sloth bears, samburs, spotted deer, hog, mouse, and barking deer, wild boars, porcupines, ant-eaters, civet cats, loris, giant squirrels, and monkeys such the macaque, purple-faced leaf monkey, and grey langurs. Yala is the biggest of the parks, and jeep safaris there offer up-close experiences with leopards as well as a wealth of birdlife. UdaWalawe Park is the best place to watch elephants.
In Sri Lanka, it is strongly recommended against drinking tap water. Always choose filtered and treated water. You can carry your own refillable water bottles which you get refilled at the hotel or restaurants you visit. Supermarkets are the best place to buy packaged drinking water, if needed.
