Bhutan is a small, landlocked nation sandwiched between China and India in the eastern Himalayas. From subtropical plains and woodlands in the south to subalpine woods and the snow-capped Himalayas in the north, it has a diverse landscape. Bhutan is seen as the final bastion of Mahayana Buddhism and is mostly a Buddhist nation.
Bhutan can be visited all year long. Summer (June to August), autumn (September to November), winter (December to February), and spring are the four seasons (March to May). Nonetheless, the country has a wide range of altitudes, and the north Indian monsoons have a significant impact on the climate. Temperatures in the southern hemisphere typically range from 15°C to 30°C year-round in a humid, subtropical climate. Warm summers and chilly, dry winters characterise the climate in central Bhutan, which features temperate woods. Winter temperatures in the north are substantially lower. Mountain summits are always covered in snow due to their high height, and the lower regions are kept cool in the summer.
It is not possible to book your own flight into Paro due to Bhutan's restrictions and controls on tourists entering the country, thus we book your flights into and out of Bhutan for you. If you choose to fly from one of those locations and meet the group in Paro for the start of the tour, there are flights into Bhutan from Delhi, Kolkata, Kathmandu, and Bangkok (which we would also book).
Indeed, it is a requirement of the Bhutanese government that you book your journey to Bhutan through a legitimate Bhutanese travel operator or one of their affiliates abroad.
Bhutan is a country where 19 different languages are spoken, but Dzongkha is the official language. Since English is used in every aspect of Bhutan's educational system, it is widely accepted and used.
A maximum of 20 kilograms of checked baggage is allowed on Druk Air. Only one piece of hand luggage, such as a handbag, coat, or camera, will fit on board this small aircraft. Your checked luggage allowance will be increased by any additional baggage. If the weight of the bag exceeds 20 kilograms, additional fees will be charged.
Any foreign visitors intending to travel to Bhutan must get a visa in advance from a recognised Bhutanese tour operator or one of their international affiliates. To fly to Bhutan, your travel operator needs to receive a copy of the visa approval. Bangladeshi nationals, Maldivians, and those with Indian passports (or VIC) may acquire an entrance permit or a visa upon arrival.
People have occasionally experienced problems with the altitude, but since it's such a subjective issue, it's difficult to predict who it will be a problem for. Bhutan is located high in the Himalayas. Participants should be in reasonable physical shape and plan to perform some mild hiking during the trip. We advise consulting your doctor.
Bhutan's unique culture and spirituality are reflected in its festivals. Bhutan celebrates a number of traditional festivals throughout the year, and it is imperative to take part in the breathtaking celebration when visiting Bhutan at least once in your lifetime to see the distinctive Cham dance and get a feel for the real Bhutan with a welcoming people.
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a daily charge that tourists pay to help Bhutan's growth. The growth of the kingdom has been greatly influenced by visitors ever since it initially opened its doors in 1974. This cooperation is once again growing as they reopened on September 23rd 2022, enabling them to safeguard the kingdom and its unique riches. Also, it enables the authorities to maintain stable visitor numbers so that they can keep providing the visitors with a quiet and personalised experience. The SDF is collected by the national exchequer, and funds are distributed to various projects that improve infrastructure, services, and facilities for both Bhutanese citizens and visitors.
Consider wearing a fleece or light rain jacket as your outer layer, followed by a button-up shirt as a middle layer and a t-shirt as a base layer. Evenings will be chilly, potentially even freezing, while sunny days will reach lows of 15 to 21 degrees Celsius. In Bhutan, it is not advisable to wear shorts out of respect for the people. These are obviously inappropriate to wear to monasteries. While visiting a festival or monastery, Capris are preferred, and we've even heard that some guides fidget at wearing these. It's also preferable to avoid wearing skirts that go above the knee to temples. They can refuse to let you inside. Ankle length skirts are good to go. In Bhutan, shorts and short skirts or anything revealing, even if it is your blouse, are simply inappropriate.
Bhutanese food is distinctive for its strong flavour. The majority of Bhutanese people would not like a dinner that was not hot because chillies are a necessary component of almost every plate and are so highly valued in Bhutan. The major component of most Bhutanese meals is rice. It includes one or two side dishes that are made of either meat or vegetables. The most common meats are chicken, pork, and beef. Several restaurants across the nation offer a vast variety of western and Indian food.
Hiring a vehicle and driver from a car rental business or a tourism service provider is the most practical method to travel in Bhutan. In Bhutan, renting a self-driving car is not an option. You might be able to get transportation from your hotel or have it set up for you. If you are travelling with us, we will arrange your transportation. In Bhutan, domestic planes are frequently the quickest option for lengthier journeys. Flights to and from Yonphula in eastern Bhutan, Bumthang in central Bhutan, and Gelephu in south-central Bhutan are available from domestic airports. Helicopter services are available for custom itineraries.
