About:

The Buddhist monument at Sanchi is an important religious as well as historical place which depicts the Mauryan Art and Architecture in the form of stupas, holy shrines and monasteries of the Buddha. It is believed that when Ashoka the great Mauryan Emperor adopted Buddhism he constructed the first Stupa in Sanchi known as Sanchi Stupa to spread Buddhism and pay homage to Lord Buddha. This monument was later rediscovered by the British in the year 1818.

It is the second largest stupa, and potrays the Life and journey of Lord Buddha which attracts a large number of tourists across the world and within the country. During the Mauryan Empire, Sanchi was also known as Bota Sriparvata, Kakanaya and Kakanava. It is a famous pilgrimage destination for the followers of Buddhism.
