The Chitradurga Fort was built between the 11th and 13th century during the rule of the Chalukyas and Hoysalas, and its expansion under the rule of Vijayanagar Empire between 15th and 18th century. It is famous for rain water harvesting system, which ensured a large storage of water and never faced the issue of water shortage. This fort was also popular for The Murugarajendra Matha, which was a famous religious institution of the Lingayats. The Chitradurga Fort is a walled fortress, located in the centre of several hills in Karnataka. The seven hills surrounding the fort act as its additional walls. This fort is also known as Chitrakaldurga, and has passages, citadel, masjid, warehouses, reservoirs and abou 18 ancient temples inside the upper portion of the fort namely Hidimbeswara Temple, Sampige Siddeshwara Temple, Ekanathamma Temple, Phalguneshwara Temple, Gopala Krishna Temple, Lord Hanuman Temple, Subbaraya Temple and Nandi Temple. There is also a big temple in the lower portion of the fort. It is a popular tourist spot and is located at a distance of just 198 km from Bangalore.
