About:
Udayagiri is situated 90km away from Bhubaneshwar in Jajpur district on the banks of river Birupa. The first phase of excavation work of this place by Archaeological survey of India took place from 1985 to 1989 at Udaigiri-1 and the second phase took place from 1997 to 2003 at Udayagiri-2.
During the first phase of excavations at Udayagiri-1 (Madhavapura Mahavihara) have discovered a huge monastic complex comprising a Mahastupa and an east facing square monastery. While during the excavations at Udayagiri-2 (Simhaprastha Mahavihara) discovered the remains of a brick built double storied monastic complex with pradakshinapatha around the sanctum, vaulted windows, existence of an upper shrine chamber on the first floor, Abutted to its back wall is a brick-built water reservoir used mainly in dry season
Buddhist divinities like Tara, Majusri, Hariti, Chunda, Avalokitesvara, Vasudhara etc have been discovered in large numbers other than sculptures of Buddha and other at the site. And this site dates back to13th century AD.
